july 28th
i knew it. our hotel is tucked in a stunning valley. for the first time in weeks i needed to wear my jacket to breakfast. fog still looms above the peaks but the sun is shinning and the air is damp, cool and fresh.
breakfast was hosted in the small restaurant across the street. no one speaks english. and no one else is as bothered by all the flies as the baker family?? their irritating presence made for a quick breakfast of coffee and croissants. lets get packed and go baby, spain awaits!
on the road again.....we passed a crumbled fort tucked in the hillside and overgrown with trees. i assume it served a serious protective purpose as it sits near the border of spain. i am fascinated by what i imagine took place there long long ago. the kids too are intrigued - harry especially. he keeps talking about volcanoes, knights, bow and arrows. its a fun car topic during our big day of travel.
6.5 minutes were spent traveling through a massive and well engineered tunnel through the massive natural border the pyrenees form between france and spain. the kids attempted to hold their breath. 20 seconds later exasperated exhales and giggles were heard from the back seat. we took bets on how long it would take to pass through. again, fun car chat.
once through the tunnel, we all said "hola" to one another and took in our first sights and sounds of spain. it was the kids and my first time in spain. cool to share this first. oddly it did look and feel different. to be fair, the large mountains were behind us...but, the vista wasn't as ooh la la. definitely more active though. many more folks mountain biking, hiking and just around. more sporty?
the architecture is different too. less stucco and more rock and wood. it feels a little more ski town-esque? basically i don't think a milk maid is gonna jump out on the spanish side. more likely a man in spandex.
