castiello de jaca

july 28th

castiello de jaca:
this 12th century cathedral sits atop a hillside village near the rio aragon.  clever and tastefully done wooden signs hang somewhat discretely on the rock walls yielding a baker child's version of a scavenger hunt.

a short winding walk through ancient and tiny streets takes you to a landing where the church stretches its steeple to the bright blue sky.  made entirely of rocks, you can see where old arched doorways and small windows were filled in to create more space for a modern audience of loyal church goers.

we arrived at the start of sunday mass.  it was amazing to peek through the doorway and see and hear all the people at payer.  the sermon, in spanish of course, was beautiful and solemn.  charlotte asked if they were talking about something sad.  "no.  just serious. quietly beautiful."  while i didn't find the tone sad, i can certainly understand why she would ask.

i love that everything in this small town shuts down on sunday.  this is actually true of most places in spain on sunday.  no matter what your week may bring, you can rely on the known comforts of your sunday routine with friends and family.
