on the road: jaca to zaragoza to madrid
the distance to zaragoza and madrid was long, sunny and kind of empty of cars. it was nice to be one of few on the road. the vistas looked hot - red clay and spots of dry grasses - but the weather was quite mild.
massive modern windmills stood atop the hills and every 20 kilometers or so, a huge cut out of a black bull - the symbol of spain - interrupted the otherwise monochromatic scenery. think of a billboard. i am so annoyed i don't have a picture....
crumbled buildings hinted at small towns just off the highway. we stopped in one of these small towns for helado. fortunately there was one cafe open. remember, it was sunday. everyone was at mass, eating with family or resting at home.
zaragoza was a much needed metropolis for the baker family. the main building in square, basilica of our lady of the pillar, was spectacular. it took 40 years to build. the painted tiles on the domes were such a nice change from the usual brown.
just around the corner we had our most successful family lunch. sandwiches and sodas. for once everyone was happy - and full.
